2nd Saturday Bookbinding Workshop
Folded Structures with Lyall Harris
Saturday, September 8, 2018
12 Noon – 3:00 PM
In book art books, the structure of the book is a component, often a key component, in delivering content; at a minimum it supports content, at a maximum it is content. Take, for example, the Virginia Center for the Book’s current member project that will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This gate-fold, double-flag book structure opens as if the book itself were a bird, and that’s before we even know what text and image it will house.
In our afternoon binding session, we will explore two very different folded book structures and brainstorm on fitting content. I will show some examples from my own work to illustrate the important relationship between form and content.
